Memory Garden 10
Fairmount Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, Fairmount NJ
Church established 1747
This wide open cemetery sits on the side of Old Turnpike Road, a winding country road that leads to many more historic places along the way.
The church sits amid a sea of stones on all sides, enclosed in a stone wall.
I visited in mid fall - the trees and grasses showing their color beautifully.
The church has a timeline on their website, but not much history can be found of the burial grounds. Most of the stones are old sandstone erections, with deep browns and reds, mottled with green lichen. A side gravel drive has an old barn, and abandoned wagon garages, walking into the grounds from that side there is a sign that says there is a paper to tell you all about the cemetery - there were none there, I was sorely disappointed in that. However, the stones, as they always do, spoke to me. They each called, in turn, to tell me their tales.
