Memory Garden 7
Old Davis Cemetery, Somerset, NJ
Est. possibly mid-1700s
On a long and winding road, I saw a wall set back a ways. Across the road was the D&R Canal. The road is busy with commuter traffic daily and doesn't have much of a shoulder. I saw this place and made a mental note to go back sometime - it was wildly overgrown, you could see that from the road, but one or two stones peeked out above the tall weeds and grasses.
A year later. The town had come in, cleared the brush away. A small area just before the wall was enough to park the car.
Climbing the stairs I expected to see only the one or two stones I had been able to crane my neck to peek at over a year ago. What I found was the lonely place, with more than 50-60 stones visible, and probably much more lost to the ages. The brick wall is broken in places, a wild thicket of brambles to one side, a wide open farmer's field directly behind. And then the stones began to talk..........listen to our memories.
